ART OF THE SAMURAI, PRACTICAL, USEFUL, SELF DEFENSE

"Having trained in Karate and other martial arts for 20 years and achieved 2nd Dan black belt, I am now training in Hontai Yoshin Ryu Ju-Jutsu.

I have trained nearly 3 years and have found it a truly skilful martial art to study, second to none I have trained in for practical application in real situations.

Training atmosphere is in a relaxed and friendly manner, for beginner or experienced martial artists alike , with plenty of training times available in the week to fit around my busy schedule.

Unlike many modern sport arts, this a true Japanese martial art dating back to battlefield times and the year 1635AD, thus has been practiced in real combat. situations. A+++++ Highly recommended"

MARTIAL ARTS EXCELLENCE

"The school first came to my attention when I was looking online for a Jujutsu school in the Carlisle area. I was struck by how little was available locally.

I wanted my 5 year old daughter to get a basic grounding in being able to defend herself and to learn about respect from people other than just her family members. From day one she was made to feel welcome and quickly became very keen on her weekly lesson at Jujutsu.

I was so impressed that I decided to sign up myself and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience thus far.

The other students are friendly, welcoming and helpful. A thoroughly nice bunch of people to be around.

I would recommend this school to anyone who is looking to teach their children discipline and self respect and to develop their own self confidence.

The facilities are top notch and the costs are very reasonable. Highly recommended as far as I am concerned."

ALWAYS A PLEASURE.....

"NLJJA is a great organisation with superb facilities for both unarmed and armed combat training and gym and changing facilities for men and women with a great group of people of all ages and backgrounds attending the many many classes available to students ran by a great understanding and patient teacher.

The environment is both relaxing and focused and is unique in every way... Always a pleasure to attend."

DIVERSE TRAINING

"This is the only club in the north of England that teaches an authentic form of kobudo.

It is professionally run by someone who has a direct link to the school in Japan and so about 400 years of tradition.

This mixed with the extensive practical experience available makes this club perfect for both, beginners and those who have trained for many years, those interested in weapons work or just hand to hand combat."

GREAT MARTIAL ART SCHOOL

"North Lakes Jujutsu Association is a the place in the north of UK to learn authentic Japanese martial arts, the real way of the samurai.

The training room is nice and the teacher and the other students very helpful."

The North Lakes Jujutsu Association is an independant not for profit association. We are dedicated to the promotion and study of Hontai Yoshin Ryu which is an authentic Japanese Koryu composite martial art.

We are based in Carlisle, Cumbria and are the the North's only dedicated 'Koryu' organisation.

We are part the UK Hontai Yoshin Ryu branch.

Hontai Yoshin Ryu founder
TAKAGI Oriemon Shigetoshi

The term 'Koryu' was originally coined by the Japanese government and is used specifically to refer to arts that have been verified by them as historically authentic.

A koryu predates Japan's modern era which began in 1868 with the Emperor Meiji, this is referred to as the Meiji era.

Although in the UK there are many martial arts clubs that practice modern western variants of Japanese martial arts with western associations, and also clubs who may have links with Japanese organisations we are different in the fact that we only practice Koryu Jujutsu.

As with any koryu the central focus is the Soke or Grandmaster. Our students have regular opportunities to be taught directly by the 19th Hontai Yoshin Ryu Soke, INOUE Kyoichi Munenori.

Hontai Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu is an highly effective fighting method with both unarmed and armed strategies and techniques that have survived the bloody battlefields of feudal Japan and continued developing into the modern era.

In an increasingly violent modern society we believe that it is important to teach our students effective self defence techniques from the beginning stages of their training, and with this in mind our membership is also open to individuals our groups that are of good character.

We are based in our own full time dojo and martial artists gym in Carlisle, and accept new students into our classes by appointment, and also have private and small group lessons available, please contact us for details.

HONTAI YOSHIN RYU JUJUTSU has a lineage dating from the founder TAKAGI Oriemon Shigetoshi who was born in 1635, to the present day through 19th generation headmaster or 'Soke' of the ryu Soke INOUE Kyoichi Munenori.

INOUE Soke, inherited the title of Soke in January of 2005 from his father and 18th generation headmaster Soke INOUE Tsuyoshi Munetoshi, and continues his work spreading the teachings of Hontai Yoshin Ryu and the true spirit of kobudo throughout the world.

Hontai Yoshin Ryu is recognised as an authentic ryu with a verified lineage by the Japanese government's Nihon Kobudo Kyokai (or the Japanese Classical Martial Arts Association, which is part of the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo Japan). Hontai Yoshin Ryu have been not only been members of this body since its establishment but were also instrumental in it's founding.

Unlike many martial arts, Hontai Yoshin Ryu is a 'Sogo Bujutsu' art or composite art. The teachings of the ryu include both empty handed and weapons ares alongside each other.

The techniques of Hontai Yoshin Ryu use the principles of gyaku (joint locks), kuzushi (breaking balance), nage (throwing techniques), atemi (striking), taisabaki (body movement) and irimi (entering), alongside the Jujutsu unarmed techniques the teachings include Jujutsu, Chobo (6' staff), Kodachi (short sword), Tanto dori (knife taking), Hanbo (3' staff), and Kenjutsu / Iaijutsu (long sword), with the core teachings of the ryu being Jujutsu, Bojutsu and Kodachi.
